"The Innocence He Refused to Break"

🌙 CHAPTER 1 — THE NIGHT, SHE HEARD HIM (Hindi)

Suhani POV

Gaon ki raat kuch alag hi hoti thi.

Din bhar ki bhaag-daud ke baad jab poora aangan shaant ho jaata, toh sirf door kahin kutte ke bhonkne ki awaaz, pedon se takrati hawa aur kabhi-kabhi kisi ke ghar ka band hota darwaza sunai deta.

Suhani bhi aaj ghar ke har kone ka chakkar laga rahi thi.

“Suhani, ghar ka koi kaam adhura nahi rehna chahiye. Subah mujhe kisi cheez ki shikayat nahi chahiye.”
“Suhani, no household work should be left unfinished. I don't want any complaints from you in the morning.”

Suhani ne hamesha ki tarah chupchaap sir jhuka diya tha.

“Ji, Maaji.”
“Yes, Maaji.”

Usne kabhi jawaab dena nahi seekha tha.

Na shikayat karna.

Na apni pareshaani batana.

Aur na hi kisi ko yeh kehna ki kabhi-kabhi uska dil bhi karta tha ki koi bas uske paas baith kar pooch le—

“Suhani, tum theek ho?”

Lekin aaj bhi woh sawaal poochne wala koi nahi tha.

Kaam khatam karke woh dheere-dheere apne kamre ki taraf badhi.

Usne raat ke liye ek safed chiffon ki saari pehni hui thi. Saari ko usne bas yun hi lapet rakha tha; neend aane ki jaldi mein usne use theek se pin bhi nahi kiya tha. Pallu bhi dheere-dheere uske kandhe se sarak raha tha.

Sar par ghunghat bhi nahi tha.

Ghar mein sab so chuke the.

Suhani ko laga, “Ab kaun dekhega?”

Woh apne pallu ko ek haath se sambhalte hue aage badhi.

Tabhi—

“Ahh…”

Ek halki si dabi hui awaaz uske kaanon tak pahunchi.

Suhani ke kadam turant ruk gaye.

Woh palat kar saamne wale kamre ki taraf dekhne lagi.

Woh uske Jeth Ji ka kamra tha.

Andar se phir kuch awaaz aayi.

Jaise koi takleef mein ho.

Suhani ke chehre par chinta aa gayi.

Woh dheere-dheere darwaze ke paas pahunchi.

Usne pehle darwaze par halki si ungliyon se dastak di.

“Jeth Ji…?”

Koi jawaab nahi.

Phir se thodi tej awaaz aai.

"Ahh...Suhani"

Suhani ne thoda aur kareeb hokar poocha—

“Aap theek hain, Jeth Ji?”
“Are you alright, Jeth Ji?”

Phir bhi andar se koi jawaab nahi aaya.

Usne kuch pal intezaar kiya.

Khamoshi.

Suhani ne ek baar peeche mudkar dekha.

Uske mann ne kaha, “Shayad chale jaana chahiye.”

Aakhir raat bahut ho chuki thi.

Lekin agle hi pal usse Maaji ki baat yaad aa gayi.

Unhone shaam ko use sakht lehze mein kaha tha—

“Apne Jeth Ji ka poora khayal rakhna. Unhe kisi cheez ki zarurat ho toh tumhe dekhna hai. Agar unki seva mein koi kami hui na, toh achha nahi hoga tumhare saath.”
“Take proper care of your Jeth Ji. If he needs anything, you are responsible for it. If there is any negligence in looking after him, it will not end well for you.”

Suhani ka chehra utar gaya.

Woh kabhi Maaji ko naraaz nahi karna chahti thi.

Usne phir darwaze ki taraf dekha.

Andar se ek aur halki si awaaz aayi.

Is baar uski chinta aur badh gayi.

“Jeth Ji…?”

Uski awaaz pehle se bhi zyada narm thi.

“Aapko dard ho raha hai kya?”
“Are you in pain?”

Koi jawaab nahi.

Suhani ne apni ungli darwaze ke kinare par rakh di.

Uske mann mein hazaar sawaal uth rahe the.

Andar sab theek toh hai?

Unhe kuch ho toh nahi gaya?

Aur sabse bada sawaal—

Darwaza kholna chahiye… ya nahi?

Woh kuch pal wahi khadi rahi.

Phir usne gehri saans li.

“Jeth Ji… main andar aa jaaun?”
“Jeth Ji… may I come inside?”

Is baar bhi koi jawaab nahi aaya.

Suhani ne dheere se darwaze ki kundi ki taraf haath badhaya—

Aur usi pal andar se ek ajeeb si awaaz phir sunai di.

Uska haath wahi ruk gaya.

Us raat Suhani ko bilkul andaaza nahi tha…

ki ek band darwaze ke saamne khadi woh chhoti si masoomiyat,
aane wale dinon mein uski zindagi ke sabse mushkil sawaalon ka saamna karne wali thi.

🌙 CHAPTER 1 — THE NIGHT, SHE HEARD HIM (English)

Suhani POV

There was something different about nights in the village.

After the day’s endless rush, the entire courtyard would fall silent. Only the distant barking of dogs, the wind brushing against the trees, and the occasional sound of a door closing somewhere could be heard.

Suhani was still making her rounds through every corner of the house.

Holding a small lantern, she checked whether the kitchen had been secured, whether the utensils left in the courtyard had been brought inside, and whether the cow had been fed.

Before leaving, her mother-in-law had given her a long list of instructions, as she always did.

“Suhani, ghar ka koi kaam adhura nahi rehna chahiye. Subah mujhe kisi cheez ki shikayat nahi chahiye.”
“Suhani, no household work should be left unfinished. I don't want any complaints from you in the morning.”

Suhani had lowered her head silently, as she always did.

“Ji, Maaji.”
“Yes, Maaji.”

She had never learned how to answer back.

How to complain.

How to speak about her troubles.

Nor had she ever told anyone that sometimes she wished someone would simply sit beside her and ask—

“Suhani, are you all right?”

But even tonight, there was no one to ask her that question.

After finishing her chores, she slowly began walking toward her room.

She was wearing a white chiffon saree for the night. She had wrapped it around herself carelessly; in her hurry to sleep, she had not pinned it properly. The pallu was slowly slipping from her shoulder.

There was no veil covering her head either.

Everyone in the house had already gone to sleep.

Suhani thought,

“Ab kaun dekhega?”
“Who will see me now?”

Holding her pallu in place with one hand, she continued forward.

Then—

“Ahh…”

A faint, muffled sound reached her ears.

Suhani stopped immediately.

She turned toward the room across from her.

It was her Jeth Ji’s room.

Another sound came from inside.

It sounded as though someone was in pain.

Concern appeared on Suhani’s face.

She slowly approached the door.

First, she tapped lightly with her fingers.

“Jeth Ji…?”

There was no answer.

Another sound came this time louder.

"Ahh...Suhani"

Suhani moved a little closer and asked—

“Aap theek hain, Jeth Ji?”
“Are you alright, Jeth Ji?”

Still, no reply came from inside.

She waited for a few moments.

Silence.

Suhani glanced over her shoulder.

A voice inside her mind told her, “Perhaps I should leave.”

After all, it was already very late.

But then she remembered what Maaji had told her.

That evening, her mother-in-law had spoken to her in a stern voice—

“Apne Jeth Ji ki zarurato ka poora khayal rakhna. Unhe kisi cheez ki zarurat ho toh tujhe dekhna hai. Agar unki seva mein koi kami hui na, toh achha nahi hoga tere saath.”
“Take proper care of your Jeth Ji. If he needs anything, you are responsible for it. If there is any negligence in looking after him, it will not end well for you.”

Suhani’s face fell.

She never wanted to anger Maaji.

She looked toward the door again.

Another faint sound came from inside.

This time, her concern grew stronger.

“Jeth Ji…?”

Her voice was even softer than before.

“Aapko dard ho raha hai kya?”
“Are you in pain?”

There was no answer.

Suhani placed her fingers against the edge of the door.

A thousand questions rose in her mind.

Is everything all right inside?

Could something have happened to him?

And the biggest question of all—

Should she open the door… or not?

She stood there for a few moments.

Then she took a deep breath.

“Jeth Ji… main andar aa jaaun?”
“Jeth Ji… may I come inside?”

Again, there was no response.

Suhani slowly reached for the latch—

And at that very moment, another strange sound came from inside.

Her hand froze.

That night, Suhani had no idea…

that the innocence standing before a closed door

would soon have to face the most difficult questions of her life.

Will they cross the line they've spent so long protecting—or will she finally understand what his gaze means and choose what she wants for herself?
